Larry & Gale Book were owners of Characters Songwriters’ Cafe in Perdido Key, Fla., then it was destroyed by Hurricane Ivan in 2004. It had been been referred to as the “Bluebird of the South ” with this couple hosting songwriter nights as well as bringing in several Nashville hit songwriters on a regular basis including the likes of Steve Williams and Thom Shepherd (“Red Neck Yacht Club”) ; Will Nance (“She’s Everything” sung by Brad Paisley) ; Brett Jones, writer on 14 Top 10’s including Billy Currington’s “That’s How Country Boys Roll” and Jason Aldean’s “Crazytown”. Kenny Chesney’s #1 “Don’t Blink” written by their friend, Chris Wallin, is also one of the many writers they hosted.
They decided not to rebuild Chracters but continued to perform as a duo and sometimes with a band and kept their connections with Nashville. They host home home concerts for hit songwriters throughout the year. Larry was coordinator of NSAI (Nashville Songwriters Association International) for the Pensacola/Perdido Key area from 2003-2014. He and Gale released a double CD project of original songs in 2015. They have donated over $5000 of their sales to the Independence Fund which pays for Track Chairs for wounded warriors.
